At the HyperFast Sales Summit, Ryan Serhant told amazing stories of his early struggles – and how he overcame them to build one of the highest-selling teams in the world.
Today, the Serhant Team is the top real estate team in NYC and one of the top three real estate teams in the entire nation. They’ve sold $838 million in real estate volume in a single year.
Here are three key takeaways from Ryan Serhant’s HyperFast Sales Summit keynote that any agent can apply.
The no-cost competitive advantage most agents neglect
Commit to practicing your skills every day, and you’re already ahead of most competitors.
Very few real estate agents set aside time to practice the core skills that will make or break their success.
Every real estate agent can benefit from practicing essential skills. That’s as true for new agents as it is for the top producer selling $10-$20 million a year.
All other professions learn and practice. Athletes spend almost all of their time practicing; time spent in actual games is a tiny percentage of their time.
If you take your own success seriously, think like an athlete. Hone your real estate skills and practice.
Ryan Serhant’s weird secret for real estate success
Here’s how to practice being uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable.
Ok, so we’ve established that you should practice. But how do you practice for something as unpredictable as real estate?
Ryan recommends improv classes. Improv (short for “improvisation”) classes lead you through some improvised comedy games in which you’ll need to act out ridiculous situations, like the example Ryan gave: “You and your classmates are dogs. On fire. On Mars.”
According to Serhant: Once you’ve survived being that ridiculous and uncomfortable among other people, you can handle any awkward situation real estate throws at you. 🔥🐩🔥
Treat your first few years in real estate like you’re going to grad school.
Forget earning and focus on learning.
Other professions, like doctors and lawyers, spend time in school just learning. For years. Without earning any money.
If you go into your first few years in real estate with the attitude that your main goal is to learn, then any business you pick up during that time is a bonus. Play the long game and learn everything you can, even when the lessons are harsh. Remember that few other professions — especially such high-paying professions with so much growth opportunity — get to earn any income while they learn.
There are always exceptions, like Dan’s $22 million rookie year. Ironically, though, these success stories often happen to the agents who are the most focused on learning. You can read more about how Dan achieved his amazing first year in his best-selling book, The HyperLocal HyperFast Real Estate Agent.
