Being a female business owner in the real estate industry allows you to provide for your family and design your schedule so that you can be there for them when it matters most.
But freedom isn’t built into the job by default. Much of the work in real estate is done on the timetable of houses that become available and offers that are coming in. So it does take extra dedication and work upfront to design a life with the flexibility that you want. It takes building your business up to a point where you can hire an assistant and support staff who will unlock your earning potential.
Here’s what I’ve found most difficult about owning a real estate business — and my advice to female entrepreneurs everywhere.
Houses aren’t the hardest part of the real estate business
The hardest part of running a business for me is when people let you down.
Other people have lives, they have their own things going on. Trying to find someone to fill in for someone who mattered a lot to me is difficult.
There have also been times when I thought I could trust someone and then found evidence someone had stolen from me, betrayed me, or otherwise let me down. Those moments are the hardest, because I have such a belief in people and I trust easily.
No matter what, it’s important to shake it off, pick yourself up, and move on.
Design your destiny
My most important message to aspiring female entrepreneurs is: Design your destiny.
If you don’t step up and figure out what it is that you want, who will? Show up for yourself. Believe in yourself enough to create the life you want, even when you encounter setbacks.
If you DON’T decide what you want…
You’ll by default be allowing others to dictate how you relate to your family, how you run your business, and you’ll be putting your dreams at their mercy.
Decide what you want. Dream big; be bold. Then embrace the hard work that will pay off with a life that you (and your loved ones) love.
